Mugkett was in Groningen om met de president van Special Olympics Inc. overleg te plegen. De twee bespraken onder meer de mogelijkheden voor Malta om de European Games of een soortgelijk evenement te organiseren. “In eerste instantie denken we aan een meer regionaal getint evenement voor sporters met een verstandelijke handicap,” aldus Mugkett. “Malta is zeer ambitieus, ondanks dat we nog maar een jaar lid zijn van de Special Olympics-beweging en er hier maar veertien Maltezen aan de start verschijnen.”The Maltese minister of Sport, Jesmond Mugkett, attended the 2000 Special Olympics European Games on Thursday. He visited the athletics and presented some medals, among witch a golden, to a fellow countryman.The minister said “he was impressed by the joy and sportsmanship between all athletes. The atmosphere is splendid and the organization is perfect. We all could learn a lot from these Games”.Mugkett came to Groningen to negotiate with the president of Special Olympics International. They talked, amongst other things, about the options for Malta to organize the European Games, or sometrhing of the kind. “”In the first place we consider rather a more event for mental handicapped athletes, focussed on the region,” Mugkett explains. “Malta is very ambitious, although we’re a member of the Special Olympics movement for only one year, and no more than fourteen Maltese will show up at the start”.
