Het zeilen kan beginnen! “Maar windkracht vier is de limiet”, vertelt coördinator Ties Kruyt. Maandagmiddag verkennen de sporters het meer, de boten en de startprocedures. Dinsdag vindt de indeling van de 26 teams op niveau plaats, zodat aan het eind van de dag de wedstrijden kunnen starten. Elke sporter wordt begeleidt, zodat elke boot een valide en een invalide telt. Dat veiligheid voorop staat mag duidelijk zijn. Nu nog goed zeilweer en de sporters kunnen van start. De woorden van een vrijwilliger zijn doeltreffend: “Na zo’n storm kan het alleen nog maar beter worden.”

SAILING REGATTA OPENED
A fresh wind plays with the spectators’ hair while all eyes are focussed on the Paterwoldse Lake. Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter, an historical seaman from centuries ago, comes sailing in to open the Games’ sailing event. The main land greets him with cannon fire. The setting is decorated with two sparkling hoses. Using the historical phrase “Good afternoon farmers, city folks and countrymen” he starts of his opening speech and fires off the last cannonball himself. Let the sailing begin! However, “Windshield factor 4 is the limit”, says coordinator Ties Kruyt. Tuesday the divisioning of the 26 teams takes place, in order to start of the matches at the end of the day. Every sportsman will be accompanied, every boat will have a handicapped and non-handicapped aboard. It’s obvious that safety comes first. Now all we need is good sailing weather and the sportsmen are ready to go. One volunteer’s words capture the spirit: ”After a storm like that things can only get better”.
