BASKETBAL ALS EERSTE VAN START<br><i>BASKETBAL FIRST TO START</i>

Twintig heren- en zes damesbasketbalteams treden in het strijdperk, eerst op het Sportcentrum van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en de finales in de Martinihal. Allereerst vindt er de zogenaamde Divisionering plaats, waarna de teams op sterkte kunnen worden ingedeeld. De divisionering bestaat uit een gedeelte waarin de individuele kwaliteiten van de sporters, in dit geval dribbelen en schieten, worden beoordeeld en een deel waarbij de landenteams tegen elkaar spelen. De enthousiaste Spaanse herenploeg gaf in een eerste reactie aan tevreden te zijn over de hun prestaties, maar minder over het Nederlandse klimaat. ‘Maar het gaat allemaal om de sport en de kameraadschap’ aldus een Spaanse deelnemer.

Basketball first to start

Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m. the first athletes where ready to start of the 2000 Special Olympics European at the Aclo sports center. Basketball had the honor to be the first sport to play in the Games. Twenty men’s and six women’s teams will enter the arena, first at the Sports Center of the University of Groningen, later the finals will be played in the Martinihal. First the so-called divisioning will take place, after which the teams will be grouped together in pools of the same strength. The divisioning exist out of two parts. In the first the individual skills, in this case dribbling and shooting, are evaluated, in the other the national teams play each other. The enthusiastic Spanish men’s team said to be very satisfied with their first achievements, but less happy about the Dutch climate. “But it’s all about the sport and comradeship ” , said a Spanish participant.
