Handen schuddend begeeft ze zich tussen de mensen en ook de sporters kunnen niet om haar heen. Ze reikt de zwemmedailles uit, zoekt contact met de zwemmers én met de vrijwilligers. Erica Terpstra verrast één van hen volledig door hem in de kraag te pakken en zegt: “Geweldig wat jij doet!”
Dat Terpstra onder de indruk is van de 2000 Games blijkt als ze de microfoon krijgt: “Ik kom hier niet alleen voor de atleten, ik heb vooral geweldig respect en grote waardering voor alle vrijwilligers. Drie maal hoera!”The crowd in the arena of the pool was ecstatic when Erica Terpstra, former state secretary of sport, came and sat amongst them. Shaking hands as she went she mingled amongst the people, as well as the athletes, whom enjoyed her company. She handed out the swimming medals, talked to the swimmers, and the volunteers. Erica Terpstra surprised one of them especially, by grabbing him in the collar and saying: “ It is great what you are doing!” The 2000 Games impress Terpstra and she shows this when she has a microphone: “ I am not here for just the athletes, I have a great respect and appreciation for all the volunteers.
