On the open stands next to the track course there is a group Dutchmen cheering in the rain. They are family members of Dutch athletes from the region of Rotterdam. Because none of their own children are in the race they’ve decided to all cheer on a nice Russian athlete named Igor. Whenever the Russian runs by the stands the crowd roars:”Go Igor! Go for it!”
The popular Russian turns out to be Igor Istioufeev, a 22-year old carpenter from Wolgograd. He is very impressed by all the encouraging by the unfamiliar Dutchmen. He expresses his gratitude for the “warm heart” and sympathy the Dutch feel for him. It really helped him and made him run even faster. (translation by Rene van der Hoofd)
