Erkenning als officiele sport hangt af van het advies van een internationaal medisch comité. Vervolgens neemt het hoogste bestuursorgaan een beslissing.Zestig sporters van acht Nederlandse judoverenigingen streden onder toezicht van IOC-lid Anton Geesink in poules van vier tot zeven personen om de hoogste eer. Geesink toont zich een voorstander van een officiele status: “Ik vind dat het al veel te lang duurt. Vandaag was een feestdag voor mij en de sport.”There is a good chance that judo will be a future official Special Olympics sport. A delegation of the SOI was present at the judo tournament in sports center Kardinge. Lee Todd showed reasonable optimism when speaking on behalf of the organization: “ We are impressed with the presentation and the performance of the athletes and coaches”. Recognition as an official sport depends on the advice of the international medical committee. Then the highest board will take a decision. Sixty athletes of eight Dutch judo union competed under the auspicious eye of IOC-member Anton Geesink, in pools of four to seven persons for the highest honor. Geesink showed he supports the official status: “ I think it is taking too long. Today was a festive day for me and the sport.”
